'Reign Over Me' to Screen Sept. 11-14
at UW-Eau Claire's Davies Theatre

RELEASED: Sept. 4, 2008

Reign Over Me posterEAU CLAIRE — Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle lead a strong cast in the film "Reign Over Me" (2007), screening Sept. 11-14 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The University Activities Commission of the Student Senate will present the drama at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

Former college roommates Charlie Fineman (Sandler) and Alan Johnson (Cheadle) meet by chance on a New York City street corner. Charlie has slipped away from reality since the death of his wife and children on 9/11, and Alan is stunned to see the changes in his formerly gregarious friend. Alan has a successful Manhattan dental practice, and although he should be enjoying his own family and career he finds himself overwhelmed by his responsibilities. The chance meeting renews their long-forgotten friendship, which becomes a lifeline for them both.

"Sandler (never making a false step while maneuvering though vertiginous mood swings) and Cheadle (deftly commingling instinctive decency with quiet desperation) are individually excellent, and bring out the best in each other," wrote Variety. "And the picture itself transcends its real but relatively minor flaws to score a satisfyingly potent impact."

"Comedy-inflected dramas about grief are hard enough to get right when the loss at hand is purely fictional," wrote the Hollywood Reporter. "How much harder it is when a character's loss is linked to a real catastrophe that each member of the audience has processed in a deeply individual way. 'Reign Over Me' makes the effort seem natural, displaying sensitivity without over-reverence ... It doesn't exploit our emotions about Sept. 11; it simply tells a story that exists because of what happened that day."

Written and directed by Mike Binder, the 124-minute film is rated R.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty/staff, or $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door.
