UW-Eau Claire Chinese Cultural Events Welcome
International Students, Share Culture

RELEASED: Sept. 2, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — During September a series of Chinese cultural events will be held to welcome four Chinese students, the first participants in the China 1+2+1 Partnership Program, to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and share Chinese culture with the campus and the Eau Claire community.

Students enrolled in the China 1+2+1 Partnership Program — facilitated through the China Center for International Educational Exchange and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities — spend a year at a Chinese university, study at UW-Eau Claire for two years and return to the institution in China for their final year. After completing all program requirements at both institutions, students receive bachelor's degrees from UW-Eau Claire and the institution in China.

The September events will honor Yifei Xu, from Nanjing University of Technology; Xi Lin, from Hefei University of Technology; and Yuan Tang and Yifan Zhang, both from Changshu Institute of Technology, who arrived on campus Aug. 20. All the events are open to students and the public, and, with the exception of the Artist Series performance and reception, are free.

The events will start with the showing of the international film "House of Flying Daggers" at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, in the television lounge of Katherine Thomas Hall. On Wednesday, Sept. 10, the newly formed Mahjong Club invites students and community members to learn how to play the Chinese game of mahjong from 4:30-6 p.m. at Intermezzos Café in Davies Center. There also will be an opportunity to learn basic Mandarin Chinese at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Katherine Thomas residence hall television lounge.

Yu Wei, a well-known Chinese choreographer who draws inspiration from a variety of forms of dance, including Chinese traditional, classical, folk, Western ballet and modern dance, will be on campus as part of the UW-Eau Claire Artist Series Sept. 23 and 24. Yu Wei uses a multimedia approach of short films, costumes and narration to tell about the dance, the dancer's life and Chinese culture. A reception for the choreographer will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the lower level lounge of Katherine Thomas Hall. Her Artist Series performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.

A Brown Bag Forum will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24, at noon in the President's Room of Davies Center. The topic of discussion will be "Chinese Arts Post the Cultural Revolution."

During the entire month of September there will be a Chinese exhibit in McIntyre Library's Grand Corridor, and Sodexo, UW-Eau Claire's food service, will feature Chinese cuisine.
