EAU CLAIRE — In October a team of students from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire placed second out of seven teams in the 2008 Travelers Actuarial Case Competition, receiving a $500 prize.

The six members of the team are seniors Alexandra Redpath, Mahtomedi, Minn.; Mark Frie, Augusta/Mondovi; Jessica Porath, Mosinee; Kevin Kropp, Stevens Point; and Brent Haffenbredl, Auburndale; and junior James Hollman, Weston.

Led by Kristopher Presler, associate professor of mathematics, the group competed against teams from top universities across the country.

"The competition was a unique opportunity for our students to present innovative solutions to real-world issues facing the property and casualty insurance industry today," Presler said.

For four hours in the morning, the student teams researched, organized and prepared a case outlining their strategy to manage the emerging risks they identified. In the afternoon, the teams presented their findings and resulting strategies to a panel of six actuarial and business leaders from Travelers.

The case competition was sponsored by the Travelers Actuarial Leadership Development Program. The ALDP is one of many career opportunities available for students and new graduates at Travelers. Specifically, the ALDP features a challenging rotation of job assignments; competitive actuarial exam support; formal technical, insurance and leadership training; and a comprehensive mentoring program. The ALDP offers both full-time and internship opportunities each year at Travelers locations in Hartford, Conn., and St. Paul, Minn.
