University Symphony Orchestra
to Perform Afternoon Concert Nov. 9

RELEASED: Oct. 30, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Symphony Orchestra will perform its fall concert at 2 p.m. Nov. 9 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The Symphony Orchestra, directed by Nobuyoshi Yasuda, associate professor of music, will begin the concert with Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, op. 92 in A major. The piece was premiered in Vienna on Dec. 8, 1813, at a charity concert for soldiers wounded in the Battle of Hanau.

The orchestra next will perform Benjamin Britten's "Four Sea Interludes" from the opera "Peter Grimes." Each of the four pieces is an interlude created to reflect stage action used to set the tone of the play. The opera in which these pieces originate tells the story of a fisherman who fails to relate to fellow citizens in Borough, England.

The concert will conclude with "Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Carl Maria von Weber" by Paul Hindemith. The piece, written and performed in four movements, was composed in the summer of 1943during World War II. It started as a ballet Hindemith was to write for Leonide Massine, who suggested he study the music of Carl Maria von Weber. After a falling out with Massine, Hindemith saved the music he had written for the ballet and created this piece.

Tickets, available at the UW-Eau Claire Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.

Tickets for all campus events also are on sale at the Service Center's ticket office in the main lobby of Haas Fine Arts Center. The ticket outlet is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is closed during holidays and academic breaks.
