Story Idea
A political scientist will discuss the latest trends for the Nov. 4 election and how information from previous election cycles can help people understand what will happen on Election Day. Dr. Geoffrey Peterson, associate professor of political science and American Indian studies, will present "Countdown to Election '08" from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at Sweetwaters Restaurant in Eau Claire. The director of the Political Research Institute at UW-Eau Claire, Peterson will talk about current polling and projections, how projections compare to previous election cycles and the factors that are likely to come into play in terms of the final election outcome. Peterson's primary research interests are in the fields of political behavior, elections, political communication and committee formation in legislatures. His research has appeared in numerous journals, including Political Behavior, The Journal of Political Marketing, Congress and the Presidency and The Journal of Homeland Security. Nine foreign exchange students enrolled in the English as a Second Language class "Integrated Skills" will read during a story time session held in McIntyre Library. Youth from the Children's Center will gather for story time at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the Instructional Media Center on the lower level of the library. The international students will each read a book they've selected and help education reference librarian Kati Tvaruzka lead activities, songs and dances. Dr. Brady Foust, professor of geography and anthropology, will discuss "A Supermarket Feasibility Study for the Phoenix Redevelopment Site" during an October "Ask a Scientist" presentation. Foust's presentation will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Acoustic Café in downtown Eau Claire. The "Ask a Scientist" series gives community members a chance to talk with science faculty about current topics of interest. The popular monthly series is geared toward the educated layperson. The Blugold Marching Band Stage Show will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, in Zorn Arena.
It will feature songs of the rock era and Blugold Marching Band traditions, pay homage to the alma mater and Blugold Athletics, and honor America. The Blugold Marching Band is among the most active marching bands in the Midwest. Dr. Randy Dickerson is the director.
