Victim Advocates to Speak on Sexual Violence,
Prostitution, Immigration and Human Trafficking

poster for "Speaking the Truth"EAU CLAIRE — Lina Juarbe and Carmen Pitre will present "Speaking the Truth about Sexual Violence, Prostitution, Immigration and Human Trafficking" from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 23 in Davies Theatre of Davies Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Juarbe and Pitre will examine violence against women though a human rights framework. The event is sponsored by women's studies and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Juarbe is a social and human rights activist with more than 19 years of experience in domestic violence and sexual assault. She currently works as a consultant for the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault and serves on the State of Wisconsin's Office of Justice Assistance Violence Against Women Advisory Committee. She also is co-chair of the OJA VAWA Outreach and Policy Committee. Juarbe received the Living Legend Award for community organizing and her work against racism and WCASA's Voices of Courage Award for her advocacy and leadership with clergy sexual assault survivors.

Pitre has 15 years of experience working with government and non-profit organizations. She has extensive knowledge in domestic violence, sexual assault and victim issues and currently works as the executive director of the Task Force on Family Violence, an agency helping more than 6,000 clients every year. Previously, Pitre was the project director for the Milwaukee County Judicial Oversight Initiative, coordinator for the Milwaukee Commission on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, and training coordinator for the Milwaukee County Fighting Back Initiative.
