International Students to Read to Children at McIntyre Library

RELEASED: Oct. 14, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — Nine University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire foreign exchange students enrolled in "Integrated Skills," an English as a Second Language class, will serve as guest readers at the next monthly story time session held in McIntyre Library.

Children from UW-Eau Claire's Children's Center will gather for story time at 10 a.m. Oct. 28 in the Instructional Media Center on the lower level of McIntyre Library.

The international students will each read a book they've selected and assist education reference librarian Kati Tvaruzka in leading additional activities, songs and dances.

International students participating are Daewon Kim and Min Ae Noh from South Korea; Tomomi Sato, Hiroyuki Yoneda and Yoshiyuki Mukuda from Japan; and Mutita Narkmuang from Thailand.

Also participating in story time will be three Chinese students who are enrolled in the China 1-2-1 exchange program, a program that allows students to earn degrees from UW-Eau Claire and their home institution in China. The students studied a year in China, will study at UW-Eau Claire for two years, and then will return to China for their final year. Students enrolled in that program who will read at story time are Xiaonian Hou, Yuan Tang and Yifan Zhang.

Tvaruzka, who leads the story time typically held the last Tuesday of every month, was previously a children's librarian at L.E. Phillips Memorial Library. She has been working with the ESL students, teaching them how to select appropriate books and giving them tips on reading to groups of preschoolers.

The story time session will be extended this month and last about 45 minutes. Children and grandchildren of faculty, staff, students and the general public also are invited. For more information, contact Tvaruzka at 715-836-4522 or tvaruzke@uwec.edu.
