UW-Eau Claire to Screen
'Perfume' Oct. 16-19

RELEASED: Oct. 6, 2008

poster for PerfumeEAU CLAIRE — "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" (2006), Tom Tykwer's film adaptation of Patrick Suskind's bestselling novel, will screen Oct. 16-19 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Set in the salons and slums of 18th century Paris, the period thriller will be presented Thursday through Sunday at 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw), born with no smell of his own, is endowed with a superior olfactory sense that he uses to craft the world's finest perfumes. His work turns to obsession and then to murder as he tries to create the ultimate perfume by capturing the scent of a young woman.

"This is a dark, dark, dark film, focused on an obsession so complete and lonely it shuts out all other human experience," wrote critic Roger Ebert in his four-star review. "You may not savor it, but you will not stop watching it, in horror and fascination. Why I love this story, I do not know. Why I have read the book twice and given away a dozen copies of the audio book, I cannot explain. There is nothing fun about the story, except the way it ventures so fearlessly down one limited, terrifying, seductive dead end, and finds there a solution both sublime and horrifying. It took imagination to tell it, courage to film it, thought to act it, and from the audience it requires a brave curiosity about the peculiarity of obsession."

Narrated by John Hurt, "Perfume" costars Dustin Hoffman, Alan Rickman and Rachel Hurd-Wood. The 147-minute film is rated R.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby and will be sold at the door.

Tickets for all campus events also are on sale at the Service Center's ticket office in the main lobby of Haas Fine Arts Center. The ticket outlet is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and is closed during holidays and academic breaks.
