EAU CLAIRE — Dr. David Shih, associate professor of English, will serve as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's first Campus Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity Fellow.

"Dr. Shih possesses the experience, the knowledge about issues related to equity, diversity and inclusivity, and the passion to help us create an environment supportive of diversity in its broadest meaning," Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich said of the appointment. "He will help to inform and guide our efforts in setting and achieving our goals for equity, diversity and inclusivity as described in the Centennial Plan."

"I'm honored by the confidence shown in me by the chancellor, and I hope to be able to serve in a capacity that exceeds the expectations of all of my colleagues who have made the values of equity, diversity and inclusiveness an important part of their work and lives," said Shih, who joined UW-Eau Claire's faculty in 1999. "As EDI Fellow, I see my role as that of guiding and sustaining a commitment to these values that is accountable to the educational mission of our institution and to the standards of the UW System."

Shih — who will report to the chancellor — will work closely with students, vice chancellors, academic departments and other units including Admissions, Affirmative Action, the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

As EDI Fellow, Shih will focus on equity, diversity and inclusivity issues, including:

  • Pedagogy and curricular initiatives
  • Student and employee recruitment and retention strategies
  • Promotion and follow through for the Equity Scorecard
  • Coordination with UW System and campus leaders on equity, diversity and inclusiveness projects
  • Coordinate a campus climate survey and follow-up focus groups

Shih currently holds two leadership positions at UW-Eau Claire that relate to equity, diversity and inclusivity. He is chair of the College of Arts and Sciences Diversity Advisory Committee and is a member of the Chancellor's Diversity Advisory Commission. He also serves as the evidence team leader for the Equity Scorecard, a yearlong process of assessing the university's performance with regard to equitable outcomes for students of color. The evidence team is examining institutional data to learn how students of color fare in the key areas of access, retention, institutional receptivity and excellence.

Shih received a Ph.D. in English from the University of Michigan, a master's of fine arts in creative writing from the University of Oregon, and a bachelor's in English from the University of Texas. His specialties are Asian American literature, ethnic American literature, 19th-century American literature, autobiographical studies, and creative writing.

Shih's appointment is a partial reassignment of duties. He will continue to teach in the English department.
