EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire received six graphics awards at the Association of College Unions International regional conference Nov. 7-9.

The awards recognize the work of student graphic designer Sarah Hicks and UW-Eau Claire graduate Maria Nocenti, both of Green Bay. Both artists created the work while employed in the University Centers information design services area.

Hicks received two first-place awards in the student division, for logo design and for a poster of three or more colors. Her logo for Intermezzos Cafe, a coffee bar in Davies Center, uses informal typography with an old-world European style. The design incorporates an abstract cup below the "steam" created by the two Zs in the word Intermezzos. Colors complement the signature colors of the featured coffee brand. The designer suggested that two columns adjacent to Intermezzos be wrapped in chalkboards, which converted an obstruction into a communication asset. Graphic panels topping the blackboards incorporate the logo.

In her poster for The Forum presentation by John Perkins, Hicks blended realism and abstraction to convey the content of the lecture about politics, finance, the global economy, the urban landscape and the environment. The clean typography, natural colors and dramatic use of white space suggest the environmental concerns of the speaker.

In the professional division, Nocenti received a first-place award for her logo for Fresh Start Farmers Mart, a mini farmers market on campus. The design recalls the vintage labels found on fruit and vegetable crates. The motif incorporates carrots growing under abstract rays of sunlight. Colors and typography are informal, and a circular design evokes the cycle of nature.

Nocenti received a second-place award for her series of promotions for the Fresh Start Farmers Mart. In addition to posters and flyers, stickers were created and applied to paper bags given to customers. The circular motif was printed on an eco-friendly canvas tote sold in the University Bookstore and at the farmers market in front of Zorn Arena.

Nocenti swept the professional division of the full-color poster design category. She received first place for her poster for the International Film Society presentation of "Casshern" and second place for her design promoting the Campus-Community Connection, an event that introduces students to city resources, community service agencies and retailers.

Hicks is a candidate for a bachelor of fine arts degree in graphic design in December. Nocenti received her bachelor of fine arts degree in graphic design in December 2007 and worked in the University Centers information design area from September 2004 until August 2008.

A Student Affairs unit of UW-Eau Claire, the University Centers is a longtime member of the Association of College Unions International. ACUI Region Eight comprises colleges and universities throughout Wisconsin, the upper peninsula of Michigan, and the Chicago metropolitan area.
