UW-Eau Claire Jazz IV and V to Perform Nov. 25

RELEASED: Nov. 21, 2008

trumpetEAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Jazz Ensembles IV and V will perform a fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 25 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Both ensembles will feature student conductors for this performance. The Jazz IV Ensemble will be directed by seniors Jim Geddes, Fond du Lac, and Corey Cunningham, Holmen. Jazz Ensemble V will be directed by seniors Brian Claxton, Pepin, and Brian Handeland, Minneapolis, Minn.

Jazz Ensemble IV will perform a tribute to American jazz musician Gordon Goodwin and his Big Phat Band. They will open with "Go'n and Git it Y'all," a tune that shows Goodwin's strengths as a composer. Other selections include "Hunting Wabbits" and "Samba del Gringo."

Geddes said he is excited about the performance.

"Hopefully, by the end of the concert people will have a good idea of what to expect from future big band music," Geddes said.

The theme for the Jazz V performance will be "Big Bands, Past and Present." They will play favorites from Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and many more. The ensemble also will play some modern arrangements of Big Band classics. Director Brian Claxton said the concert will be a "diverse stylistic performance."

Jazz Ensembles IV and V are directed by Robert Baca, professor of music.

The Jazz IV and V concert is free and open to the public.
