EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Symphony Band and Wind Symphony will present a concert at 5 p.m. Nov. 23 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
The Symphony Band, under the direction of Phillip Ostrander, will begin with "Shortcut Home" by Dana Wilson, followed by "English Dances" by Malcolm Arnold and "Black Horse Troop" by John Phillip Sousa. These pieces will feature guest conductor Steve Peterson, director of bands at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y. The Symphony Band will close out its half of the concert with performances of "Lux Aeterna" by Yo Goto and "Shadow Rituals" by Michael Markowski.
The Wind Symphony then will take the stage, opening with Jack Stamp's "Aubrey Fanfare," followed by "French Impressions" by Guy Woolfenden and "O Magnum Mysterium" by Morten Lauridesn. Next will be performances of "Variations on an Advent Hymn" by Fisher Tull and Percy Grainger's "Children's March," featuring guest conductor Dr. Stephen Peterson. The concert will conclude with "Fantasies on a Theme by Haydn" by Norman Dello Joio. The Wind Symphony is directed by James Colonna.
Peterson teaches courses in conducting and wind literature at Ithaca College. His ensembles have appeared before conventions of the American Bandmaster's Association, the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, the College Band Director's National Convention and the American School Band Directors Association, as well as at Orchestra Hall with the Chicago Symphony Chorus and at Lincoln Center in New York City.
Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
Tickets for campus events also are on sale at the Service Center's ticket office in the main lobby of Haas Fine Arts Center. The ticket outlet is open from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It is closed during holidays and academic breaks.
