Overall Winners and School Champions Named
from Great Northwoods Sales Warm-Up Competition

RELEASED: Nov. 20, 2008

Great Northwoods Sales Warm-up award winners
Overall winners of the UW-Eau Claire Great Northwoods Sales Warm-Up include, from left to right, second runner-up Katie Wenzel, Minnesota State University-Mankato; first runner-up Sarah Windlan, Ball State University; and overall champion Amy Lytle, Bemidji State University.

EAU CLAIRE — Twelve award winners were named in the second annual Great Northwoods Sales Warm-Up, held Nov. 13-15 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and hosted by the university's department of management and marketing.

Forty-eight students from nine schools in five states competed for cash prizes and the title of top salesperson at the event, which is designed to increase student interest in sales as a profession and to give students an opportunity to "warm up" for the National Collegiate Sales Competition, held every spring at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga.

All contestants delivered two 20-minute sales presentations — one for a Hormel product, the other for a Cintas service — to an individual buyer. Sales calls were evaluated by a panel of sales professionals who viewed presentations via cablecast at a remote location. Students received evaluation sheets, a CD of their presentations and a half-hour debriefing session with one of the sales professionals who evaluated their performance.

Amy Lytle from Bemidji State University, Bemidji, Minn., was named Overall Champion. Lytle was awarded a trophy and a $1,500 cash prize sponsored by SuperValu.

Sarah Windlan from Ball State University, Muncie, Ind., was first runner-up and received a trophy and a $1,000 cash prize sponsored by Huntsinger Companies.

Katie Wenzel from Minnesota State University-Mankato, Mankato, Minn., was second runner-up and received a trophy and a $750 cash prize sponsored by Northwestern Mutual Financial Network-Bohannon Group.

The highest scoring individual from each participating school, excluding the top overall winners, was named School Champion. Each individual received a trophy and a $150 cash prize sponsored by Aflac and Wells Fargo Financial.

UW-Eau Claire's School Champion was Jason Wilson, a senior marketing major from Eagan, Minn. Other School Champion awards were presented to the following students:

  • Aurora University: Steve Salazar
  • Bemidji State University: Leo Clark III
  • Ball State University: Michael Vandy
  • College of St. Catherine: Lauren Dunlap
  • Minnesota State University-Mankato: Ashley Gainor
  • St. Cloud State University: Crystal Landherr
  • University of Northern Iowa: Katie Noonan
