RELEASED: Nov. 18, 2008

poster for Unbearable Lightness of BeingEAU CLAIRE — "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" (U.S. 1988), a lyrical and allegorical drama set in Czechoslovakia on the eve of the 1968 Soviet invasion, will screen at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Nov. 20-23. The International Film Society will present the film at 7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

Daniel Day-Lewis stars as a surgeon and compulsive womanizer who divides his time between the free-spirited painter (Lena Olin) who is one of his lovers, and the politically conscious photographer (Juliette Binoche) he marries.

"In 1988, the film received a lot of attention for its frank sexuality," wrote The Onion A.V. Club, "but its sex scenes aren't as notable for their lustiness (though it's best not to understate how sexy they are) as for how much [director Philip] Kaufman and his actors say with only body language. No one leaves the film unchallenged or unchanged. Other people and the forces of history make sure of that. And whether the outcome is tragic or blissful, it's part of what makes any life, whether lived once or repeated endlessly, worth living at all. No one floats forever."

The 171-minute film is rated R.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby and will be sold at the door.

Tickets for all campus events also are on sale at the Service Center's ticket office in the main lobby of Haas Fine Arts Center. The ticket outlet is open Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and is closed during holidays and academic breaks.

More information about the campus film series is available online and at the Activities and Programs office, Davies Center, Room 133.
