UW-Eau Claire Dance Club to Host
Swing Dance Workshops and Concert

RELEASED: Nov. 14, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — Two to Tango, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's social dance club, will host two swing dance workshops and a concert featuring a New Orleans-style jazz band Nov. 22 in the Council Fire Room in the Davies Center.

The first workshop will be from 10 a.m.-noon and will be taught by Two to Tango instructors. It will feature the east coast swing style. Attendees will learn basic footwork, turns, spins and variations including triple-step swing. Costs for the first workshop are $5 for students and $10 for community members.

The second workshop, taught by professional swing instructors Cindy and Terry Gardner, is from 12:30-4:30 p.m. and will feature the original form of swing dance — the lindy hop.

It's the most fun, creative and energetic of the social dances," said Cindy Gardner. "Its roots are in American history, and it's great for social interaction, self-expression and aerobics."

Two to Tango encourages the community to come to learn the lindy hop since it is currently not taught in the Eau Claire area.

This session is more advanced and costs $20 per student or $35 per student couple and $35 per community member or $65 per community member couple.

The Gardners are experienced swing dancers. Cindy Gardner has been teaching swing dance since 1979 and instructs more than 500 students each week in the Twin Cities area. She also directs and choreographs for the Rhythm & Swing performing group.

Terry Gardner, a popular DJ in the Twin Cities, has been teaching with Cindy since 1997. He also is the emcee for the American Lindy Hop Championships in Stamford, Conn.

The Southside Aces jazz band will perform from 7-11 p.m. The Minneapolis group is a popular band in the Twin Cities area for swing dancing and has been called "a true authentic New Orleans dance-hall style band" by "New Orleans Traditional Jazz Quarterly." Admission is $2 for students and $10 for community members.

Package deals are available for both workshops and the concert: $26 for individual students, $47 for student couples, $50 for individual community members and $95 for community member couples.

Registration for the workshops is available online and also in the Student Organizations Complex in the Davies Center. Tickets for the concert can also be purchased at the Student Organizations Complex or at the door.
