UW-Eau Claire's Jazz III to Perform Fall Concert

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble III will present a fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Crowell, will feature selections by famed Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, as arranged by Fred Sturm in his album "Libertango! Hommage to Astor Piazzolla."

The concert will begin with "Libertango," followed by "La Commora" and "Milonga del Angel." The first half of the performance will conclude with "Tres Minutos Con La Realidad."

The second half of the concert will begin with Piazzolla's "Resurreccion del Angel" and "Milonga Loca." The ensemble also will perform "Mumuki." The concert will conclude with a performance of Piazzolla's "Michelangelo."

Sturm is the director of jazz and improvisational music at the Lawrence Conservatory of Music in Appleton. His arrangements of Piazzolla's compositions include a mixture of musical styles, including rock, jazz, swing and funk.

Crowell is an associate professor of music and the wind and percussion division coordinator at UW-Eau Claire. He teaches applied percussion and percussion techniques, conducts the UW-Eau Claire Percussion Ensemble, and leads the UW-Eau Claire Jazz III Ensemble, which is comprised of 18 students who perform on saxophone, trumpet, trombone and rhythm sections.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $4 for the general public; $3 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and free for students with a university ID. Tickets for all campus events also are on sale at the Service Center's ticket office in the main lobby of Haas Fine Arts Center. The ticket outlet is open from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and is closed during holidays and academic breaks.
