Tidy Up the Town Event Helped Senior Citizens

RELEASED: Nov. 10, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — Earlier this month more than 60 University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students spent four hours performing fall cleanup activities at nine sites in the Eau Claire area as part of the seventh annual Tidy Up the Town event.

Students raked leaves and performed other fall cleanup duties for local senior citizens. Most of the students volunteered with an organization or group from campus. These included scholastic leadership honor societies Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma, Mortar Board, Golden Key and Omicron Delta Kappa; Beta Upsilon Sigma business student fraternity; Circle K service organization; Jumpstart volunteer corps; Gospel Choir; Psychology Club; Oak Ridge Residence Hall; and a First Year Experience-English 110 class.

The event was supported by two local businesses. Premium Waters Inc. supplied bottled water, and Papa John's Pizza on Clairemont Avenue provided pizza at discounted rates.

Homeowners contacted special projects coordinator Paula Stuettgen to express their appreciation for the students' work. Comments included: "The lawn looks great." "There were so many of them — I can't believe how much work they did for me. Please thank them all for helping us out."

The students also said they enjoyed the work and interacting with members of the Eau Claire community.

"We really engaged our community on a personal basis with this effort," Stuettgen said. "The volunteers' enthusiasm for the simple act of helping someone else for a few hours on a weekend made me proud of UW-Eau Claire students."

Tidy Up the Town is sponsored by the University Centers as part of the Community Action and Lifelong Learning student service initiative.
