Jazz II to Perform Fall Concert Honoring Louis Armstrong Nov. 11

RELEASED: Nov. 7, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble II, directed by Robert Baca, professor of music, will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

The theme of the concert is "Louis Armstrong In Memoriam." The second half will feature a 35-minute jazz concert work by world-class composer David Baker, a distinguished professor from Indiana University. Baker explores musically the entire history of jazz through the eyes of Louis Armstrong. The composition begins with African drumming and intertwines with the music of the West Indies, Dixieland, Blues, Chicago Jazz, New York Jazz and the Big Band Swing Era. The work also includes a pictorial slide show depicting the highlights of Armstrongs musical life.

The first half of the concert will open with Pat Williams', "In the Still of the Night," featuring junior Abby Frederick, Green Bay, on drums, and "Inside Out" by L.A. writer Matt Harris, featuring sophomore Tyler Anderson, Eagan, Minn., on tenor saxophone. Next will be the Wisconsin premiere of a new rendition of the jazz standard "Body and Soul" by L.A. arranger Gordon Goodwin, featuring junior John Uhrich, Eagan, Minn., on alto saxophone and pianist Paul Brandt on piano. The ensemble also will perform the award winning "Lockbox" by UW-Eau Claire jazz alumnus Jamey Simmons, featuring a tenor saxophone solo by sophomore Joe Tierney, Shawano.

The concert will close with a rendition of "St. Louis Blues" by WyCliffe Gordon, Lincoln Center trombonist and the director of Jazz Studies at the Julliard School of Music.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $4 for the general public; $3 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and free for students with a university ID.
