UW-Eau Claire Theatre Department to Present "Lunacy" Nov. 6-8 and 12-15

RELEASED: Nov. 4, 2008

Lunacy imageEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire department of theatre arts' production of Patricia Weaver-Francisco's "Lunacy" will open at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 6 in Riverside Theatre in the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Additional 7:30 p.m. performances will be Nov. 7-8 and Nov. 12-15, with a matinee performance at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 9.

"Lunacy," directed by Jennifer Chapman, assistant professor of music and theatre arts, depicts a fictional story about a female astronaut but integrates factual information about women who throughout history were denied opportunities to go into space. The story begins with Jean Cross, a pilot and former astronaut who moves to the New Mexico desert to have a personal relationship with the stars. A reporter tracks her down to get her personal story and introduces her to Martha Howland, an astronaut who learns that her own accomplishments have roots in the women who came before her. Howland's space journey becomes a voyage of comedic and enlightening visions of the women who preceded her. Through her encounters with Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, Galileo's daughter, the women pilots who participated in astronaut testing in the 1960s and others, Howland returns with a renewed awareness of her place in history.

The cast for "Lunacy" includes sophomore Missy Schroeder, Arcadia, as Spacewalker, Pleiades, Lewiston and Chorus; junior Laura DeShane, St. Louis Park, Minn., as Claire Robertson and Jean Cross; sophomore Karla Schulte, Oregon, as the Voice of NASA and Merope; junior Angela Busse, Curtiss, as Jean as a Child and Valentina Tereshkova; freshman Elizabeth Nevers, Wausau, as Caroline Herschel, Artemis, Anne and Chorus; sophomore Jennifer Sisko, Elkhorn, as Martha Howland; sophomore Kathy Staats, Greendale, as Corona Smith; freshman Azyhadee Salazar, Menomonie, as Pleiades, John Glenn and Chorus; sophomore Kathryn Henderson, Waukesha, as Betsy Bell, Maria Mitchell and Chorus; and sophomore Stephanie Kass, Cedarburg, as Galileo' s Daughter, Linda and Chorus.
