RELEASED: May 22, 2008

Concert Choir logoEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Concert Choir will present a Bon Voyage Concert at 7:30 p.m. May 26 at First Congregational UCC in Eau Claire.

The Concert Choir will leave May 27 for a concert tour of Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. The ensemble will travel May 27-June 8, with performances scheduled in Berlin, Auschwitz, Krakow, Prague and Leipzig.

The audience at the May 26 concert in Eau Claire will hear the same international concert repertoire that the choir will perform on its tour.

The concert and tour will feature music by German, Polish, British, Norwegian, Russian, Estonian and American composers, including Heinz Zimmermann, Henryk Górecki, Hugo Distler, Knut Nystedt, Arvo Pärt, Frank Ticheli, René Clausen, Allen Koepke, J. Randall Stroope, Moses Hogan and others.

The May 26 concert will open with Zimmermann's "Make a Joyful Noise unto God," and conclude with several African-American folk songs and Russian Alexander Gretchaninoff's "Nunc Dimittis." Included in the program is American Frank Ticheli's "Earth Song," which includes the lines "O war and power, you blind and blur. The torn heart cries out in pain. But music and singing have been my refuge, and music and singing shall be my light."

This tour marks the ninth international tour by the Concert Choir since 1964, including appearances at the 50th and 60th anniversaries of the D-Day Invasion in France. In 2006, the Concert Choir was presented with an international award for artistic excellence and cultural exchange from The Fondazione Laboratorio Mediterraneo, an organization that promotes peace, understanding and cultural exchange between the people of the two shores of the Mediterranean and the rest of the world.

There is no charge for the May 26 concert, but freewill donations will be accepted.
