EAU CLAIRE — An administrator with nearly three decades of experience working in student affairs has been named vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich announced today.

Dr. Beth Hellwig, who has served as dean of student services at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., since 2000, will begin her new position at UW-Eau Claire on July 14.

"Dr. Hellwig will bring with her an impressive amount of knowledge and experience in all aspects of student life," Levin-Stankevich said. "Given her many past accomplishments and her enthusiasm, I am confident she will serve our students and our campus extremely well."

UW-Eau Claire's new strategic plan — and the inclusive process by which it was created — were among the things that attracted her to the position, Hellwig said.

"I was very impressed by the manner in which the strategic plan and the reorganization were conducted," Hellwig said, referring to a reorganization of the university's senior-level administration that was announced late last year. "There seemed to be a very inclusive approach implemented where students, staff, faculty and administrators were asked to weigh in on the future direction of the university."

Hellwig said she also was impressed by the quality of the people she met during her on-campus interview.

"I was struck by the kindness of those who served on the search committee and the dedication that staff and faculty had toward providing students with an outstanding collegiate experience," Hellwig said. "I sincerely enjoyed my time with the various constituencies who took the time to spend interviewing me, particularly the students. I also found the Chancellor to be forward thinking, energetic and someone who absolutely loves UW-Eau Claire."

As the vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students, Hellwig will oversee a newly created division that will support student life at UW-Eau Claire. She will supervise: Athletics, Children's Center, Counseling Center, Dean of Students office, Housing and Residence Life, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Recreation and Sports Facilities, Student Health Services and University Centers.

"I am an avid and enthusiastic sports fan," Hellwig said. "Coming from Gonzaga University, I've seen what a sense of spirit and engagement can come from being involved with a quality athletic program. UW-Eau Claire has excellent student athletes and coaches who have achieved a great deal soI am delighted that Athletics will report to me. I can't wait to get out and support the various programs at the university."

Hellwig's hiring is part of a reorganization of senior level administrative positions that was announced by Levin-Stankevich in December 2007. The reorganization will result in a .5 net reduction in senior-level administrative positions and no increase in salary/benefit costs.

In planning for the reorganization, Levin-Stankevich appointed a study group to review how UW-Eau Claire could organize itself to most effectively support an integrated and distinctive student experience and to facilitate efficiencies and collaboration.

The study group recommended the university move to a system that encourages student service units to integrate better with the university's academic mission and with other units across campus, Levin-Stankevich said. The group specifically recommended the creation of a chief student affairs officer position to facilitate integration at the vice-chancellor level, he said.

Hellwig earned a Ph.D. from the University of Northern Colorado-Greeley; a master's degree from Colorado State University-Fort Collins; and a bachelor's degree from New Mexico State University-Las Cruces.
