Story Idea
Michael Ojibway, a Chippewa Falls native who graduated Saturday with a degree in psychology, has been awarded a prestigious Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship for Achieving Excellence in College and University Teaching from the National Academies. The national competition for the 60 three-year fellowships is administered by the National Research Council on behalf of the Ford Foundation. The fellowship includes a $20,000 annual stipend for three years, an award to a graduate institution in lieu of tuition and fees, and the opportunity to participate in three conferences. The selection criteria includes evidence of superior academic achievement and promise as a scholar and teacher, capacity to teach and respond to students of diverse backgrounds and membership in an ethnic group traditionally underrepresented in the American professoriate. The 8th annual "Don't Dump It, Donate It" event will continue this week from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday, May 22, in the university's Water Street parking lot on the corner of Second Avenue and Water Street. Students can donate usable clothes, household items and furniture. The event is a collaborative effort among the university and numerous local organizations and businesses.

Story Idea
The UW-Eau Claire division of the American Marketing Association was named Organization of the Year by the Indianhead Area Special Olympics. AMA members volunteer at a variety of events each year including basketball and gymnastics tournaments, track, field and aquatic events. The student organization was a sponsor for the 2008 Polar Plunge, with several members participating. The group also participated in Filling the Dream, where members pump gas for patrons at area Mega Express gas stations. AMA raised more than $6,000 for the Special Olympics in the last year. AMA will receive a plaque recognizing its achievements on June 28 at Miller Park in Milwaukee at the Special Olympics Celebration of Area Award Winners dinner. Calendar Notes

  • UW-Eau Claire's three-week Summer Session begins today. Classes will continue through Friday, June 6.
  • UW-Eau Claire offices will be closed and no classes will be held Monday, May 26, in honor of Memorial Day. Summer Session classes will resume and offices will open again Tuesday, May 27.
