postcard for Let's Do LunchEAU CLAIRE University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire geographers will discuss the sand dunes of the lower Chippewa River valley in context of the area's natural history during an Alumni Association presentation this month.

Dr. Sean Hartnett, professor of geography, and Dr. Garry Running, associate professor of geography, will discuss the dune formations during their presentation, titled "Sand Dunes in the Lower Chippewa River Valley." The talk will run from noon-1 p.m. May 28 at Sweetwaters Restaurant in Eau Claire.

"Sean will begin with an introduction to the Confluence Center for Chippewa River Studies and its role in practicing the Wisconsin Idea on campus and in the community," said Running. "Then I will discuss the sand dunes in the lower Chippewa River valley. Most people don't know that we have wind blown sand dunes this close to Eau Claire."

Hartnett, who is a founding director of the Confluence Center for Chippewa River Studies, has expertise in bathymetric mapping and the geography of the marathon. He has taught cartography and geographic techniques at UW-Eau Claire since 1984.

Running, a faculty member at UW-Eau Claire since 1996, is a broadly trained physical geographer with research interests in soils, sand dunes and geoarchaeology. He and his students have investigated such matters from the southern plains to the Canadian prairies, as well as in several locations in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest.

The May 28 presentation is part of the Alumni Association's "Let's Do Lunch" program.
