Golden Key Honour Society to Collect Books for Africa in Spring Drive

RELEASED: May 5, 2008

booksEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society will host a Books for Africa drive.

The Society will collect used textbooks May 5-16. Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to drop off their gently used books in the bins located in Davies Center by the Service Center and University Bookstore.

Members of Golden Key will collect, pack and ship the books to the Better World Books organization for sorting and distribution. The spring project — done in collaboration with the University Bookstore — normally results in several thousand books being collected.

Better World Books is an international organization that co-sponsors the Books for Africa drive with Golden Key. It takes gently used books and re-distributes them or sells them for profit. The funds collected go to literacy and education non-profit organizations.

"This book drive is an effective way for Golden Key to provide a bridge between the university and the global community," said Paula Stuettgen, faculty adviser to Golden Key. "The honor students work very hard to reach out to faculty and students who wish to recycle no-longer-needed books and give those books a new purpose."

For more information regarding Better World Books and the Books for Africa drive, visit their Web site. To arrange pick up of books from on-campus offices, contact Stuettgen at 715-836-4803.
