UW-Eau Claire to Offer Series on Human Resource Management

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Small Business Development Center and the office of Continuing Education will offer four human resources management workshops to discuss issues, answers and best practices. Small business owners, managers and human resource professionals may register for one or all of the workshops.

  • "Hiring and Firing Issues" will meet from 8:30 a.m.-noon May 13. Roger Jones from Human Resource Management Services in Rochester, Minn., will teach the session. Participants will learn how to hire employees in a way that avoids potential future problems and legal exposure. They also will learn how to terminate employees and avoid liability through proper documentation, termination meetings and exit interviews.
  • "HR and a Motivated Workforce" will meet from 1-4:30 p.m. May 13. It will be taught by Bob Pecor from Coaching Forward in Eau Claire. Participants will discover how human resources managers influence information flow, impact employee satisfaction and add value to the company.
  • "Writing Your Employee Handbook" will meet from 8:30 a.m.-noon. May 20. It will be taught by Roger Jones from Human Resource Management Services in Rochester, Minn. Participants will learn to effectively write personnel policies, and discuss how to avoid common pitfalls when communicating personnel policies to employees. He will discuss how well written employee handbooks ensure consistent treatment of employees and promote enhanced productivity and morale.
  • "Top 10 Most Common HR Mistakes (and how to avoid them!)" will run from 1-4:30 p.m. May 20. Steve Weld, president of Weld, Riley, Prenn & Ricci S.C. in Eau Claire, will lead the session. Participants will learn to reduce risk of incurring legal action and avoid unnecessary litigation by reviewing HR laws that affect the workplace.

Each half-day workshop fee is $89. A discounted fee of $296 is available for pre-registration for all four workshops by one person. Fees include instruction, course materials, Continuing Education Units and refreshments.

Workshops meet at the Sleep Inn & Suites Conference Center, 5872 33rd Ave., at the intersection of Highway 29 and County Road T in Eau Claire.
