Time to Sign up for UW-Eau Claire's Relay for Life Cancer Fundraising Event

RELEASED: March 14, 2008

Relay for Life logoEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Colleges Against Cancer organization will host the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event from 6 p.m. April 4 until 6 a.m. April 5. The event will be at the McPhee Ade Olson Center Track on upper campus.

The Relay for Life is a community effort to raise funds for cancer research, education and patient services. The event resembles an athletic relay with teams of 8-15 people taking turns running or walking around the track throughout the night. Other activities, like food eating contests and juice pong, also are planned.

Teams from companies, organizations, schools or groups of friends collect monetary donations to go to the American Cancer Society. So far, 54 teams are registered with 566 participants. These teams have raised more than $6,000. Prizes are awarded to top individual and team fundraisers.

The event will begin with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. to introduce the American Cancer Society and the goals of Relay for Life. At 6:30 p.m., cancer survivors will kick off the survivor ceremony with a lap around the track. Luminaries surrounding the track will be lit at 10 p.m. in remembrance of cancer survivors and victims.

"Relay for Life brings the progress against cancer to the forefront," said event chair Allison Engmark. "Many participants are our families, friends and peers who have dealt with cancer. Their involvement is proof of the progress that has been made not only in reducing death rates, but also in improving the quality of life following cancer treatment."

Donation information, registration forms and other information can be found at www.uwec.edu/cac. For further questions, contact Engmark at engmaram@uwec.edu.
