Regional History Day Event Set for March 26 at
UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: March 12, 2008

National History Day logoEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host the Northwestern Wisconsin Regional National History Day competition March 26.

The event is an opportunity for middle and high school students to "do" history by researching a topic of interest, and then producing historical documentaries, exhibits, dramatic performances, Web sites or research papers based on the 2008 theme "Conflict and Compromise in History."

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second floor of Davies Center at UW-Eau Claire. Area teachers, UW-Eau Claire history students, graduate students and local dignitaries will be among those judging the entries. Awards will be presented at 2 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

Organizers expect more than 150 students in grades 6-12 to participate in the event, along with 33 educators and 25 judges.

The UW-Eau Claire event is the next in a series of competitive National History Day events, which began at the individual school level and also include state and national competitions. Winners at the regional level will compete at the state level, with winners there advancing to the national competition. This is the fourth regional competition to be held at UW-Eau Claire.

Faculty sponsors of the regional competition are Dr. Kate Lang, associate professor of history and chair of the history department, and Dr. John Mann, assistant professor of history and co-director of the Learning by Doing graduate certificate program for area teachers. Event sponsors include Phi Alpha Theta, the history department, the Center for History Teaching and Learning, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Education and Human Sciences.

The Wisconsin History Day event is slated for May 3 in Madison and the national contest is set for June 15-19 near Washington, D.C.
