EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's synchronized figure skating club team, The UW-Eau Claire Goldenettes, finished its competitive season with a gold medal at the Eau Claire Figure Skating Competition at the Hobbs Ice Arena March 9.

"At Eau Claire, Gustavus Adolphus College and UW-Stout's teams (second and third place winners) were very competitive," said Mary Summers, the Goldenettes coach. "We really had to skate our best to win. The team skated as a unit, not as individuals skating together."

Synchronized skating is a fast-growing figure skating event, consisting of 16 (in the collegiate event) athletes skating at one time, moving as one flowing unit, at high speeds to music. It has been compared to a dance line on ice. It was formally known as precision skating because of the emphasis of maintaining precise formations and connected moves.

The UW-Eau Claire team includes 21 skaters. Only 16 can compete at a time with the others serving as alternates. The figure skaters formed a club team three years ago.

"They have really grown in the last couple of years," Summers said. "We have strong skaters, including several who have passed their senior test, which is the highest test level of skating attainable through the United States Figure Skating Association."

This is the second time the team won gold in the open collegiate synchronized skating event this year. The team also skated to first place at the Swan Synch Skating Competition in Beaver Dam Feb. 11.

Although their competitive season is over, the team will continue to perform with an appearance at the Eau Claire Ice Show on April 18-20; and guest appearances at ice shows in Woodbury, Minn., on April 25-26; and in Green Bay on May 2-4.
