to Perform at UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE — Jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon will join the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I in an Artists Series performance March 27. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

The show will kick off UW-Eau Claire's 41st annual Jazz Festival, one of the oldest and largest festivals in the nation. Jazz Ensemble I, directed by Robert Baca, is the five-time winner of Down Beat magazine's Best College Big Band award.

A multiple Grammy Award nominee, Freelon earned her sixth nomination with the 2005 release "Blueprint of a Lady: Sketches of Billie Holiday" on the Concord label. She has won the Eubie Blake Award and was twice nominated for the "Lady of Soul" Soul Train Award. Don Heckman of the Los Angeles Times wrote "there is no doubt that Freelon has now positioned herself in the very top echelon of jazz singers."

In January, Freelon released a greatest-hits CD, "Better Than Anything," and began a 10-week, 22-city tour with t he Monterey Jazz Festival's 50th Anniversary All-Star Band.

Tickets for the Artists Series performance are $15 for the public; $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff; and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students.

The Artists Series is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the state of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series. Freelon's concert also is supported by a Cultural Arts Grant from the Chippewa Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Funded by UW-Eau Claire students, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
