EAU CLAIRE — Seven students from Northstar Middle School in Eau Claire will have their winning Jazz Festival poster designs displayed throughout the Chippewa Valley during the Jazz in the Valley's "Artwalk" March 24-30.

The design team of Kelsey Brown and Kelce Gold was awarded first place. Elijah Koller and the design team of Samty Xiong and Erica Beede tied for second place. Tied for third place were Douglas Shoemaker and Brady Skifstad.

Students from all three middle schools in Eau Claire participated in the Visioneer Design Challenge competition in spring 2007. Professional designer Jerry Butler asked students to create a poster for a jazz fest in their community. Students spent weeks creating new, informational and aesthetically pleasing designs. With their final design pieces, they traveled to UW-Milwaukee, where the judging and critiquing process took place in the Peck School of Fine Arts.

According to Robert Baca, director of Jazz Studies at UW-Eau Claire, the competition created an opportunity to link the middle school students with UW-Eau Claire's Jazz fest, celebrating its 41st year.

"UW-Eau Claire will have the pleasure of displaying these winning designs as they promote the Jazz Festival in the Chippewa Valley," said Baca.

The poster designs also will be displayed in the Haas Fine Arts Center at UW-Eau Claire, in the lobby of the State Theater in downtown Eau Claire and at Memorial High School in Eau Claire.

"Experiencing Jazz in its various forms is part of what I envisioned for this community," Baca said. "Jazz in the Valley will provide opportunities for community members to enjoy and share in the appreciation of jazz as Americas unique and original art form."
