EAU CLAIRE — Dr. Matthew Nisbet, an internationally known social scientist, speaker and writer, will give a free public presentation at 7 p.m. March 27 in Room 007 of Phillips Science Hall at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He will present "Consensus and Conflict in Communicating Science."

Nisbet studies the ways in which language usage in science can shape the attitudes of the public. In his current research, he examines how news coverage reflects and shapes policy, how strategists try to mold public opinion and how citizens make sense of controversies. His message — that science must be "framed" for the public to ensure science-friendly policies — has itself become a controversy among scientists and science communicators.

In addition, Nisbet has analyzed a wide range of science-related debates on topics such as stem cell research, global warming and intelligent design-creationism. He has authored numerous research articles for peer-reviewed journals in communications, political science and public policy.

His blog, "Framing Science," was recognized as one of the Web's top political blogs by the New York Daily News. On it, Nisbet tracks current events related to strategic communication while adding his own ideas to the discussions.

As a professor in the science of communication at American University in Washington, D.C., Nisbet teaches courses in political communication, communication and society, graduate research and communication theory.

This lecture is sponsored by the departments of English and physics and astronomy, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Earth Science Seminar Series and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.
