EAU CLAIRE — The Chippewa Valley Youth Symphony Inaugural Concerto Competition Finals were held Feb. 23 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
The winner of the competition was Kate Van de Loo, a 9th grader from Eau Claire. Van de Loo competed on the piano, performing the third movement of Beethoven's Concerto No. 3 in C minor. She will receive $100 and perform her piece with the CVYS on May 18.
Van de Loo, the daughter of Dave and Sue Van de Loo, is a freshman at Kolbe Academy Home School.
Second place went to Julia L. Johnson, a junior at Chippewa Falls Senior High School, who performed Mozart's Concerto No. 5 in A Major. Johnson will receive $50. She is the daughter of Robert and Esther Johnson.
Sarah Kubiatowicz, oboist, placed third, performing Concerto in C minor by Benedetto Marcello. Kubiatowicz, a senior at North High School, is the daughter of Mike and Anne Kubiatowicz. She will receive $25.
The CVYS provides opportunities for area youth in grades 7-12 to develop and showcase their musical artistry in a full symphony orchestra experience, under the direction of music director Eugene Power.
The event was possible through a partnership with the UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension.
