EAU CLAIRE — Ingrid Mattson, a scholar focused on Islamic law and society and Christian-Muslim relations, will speak on The Forum lecture series Monday, March 10, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Her program, titled "The Qur'an: Its Relevance and Impact on Society," will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium.

Helaine Minkus of the UW-Eau Claire department of geography and anthropology will host a pre-Forum hors d'oeuvres reception with Mattson in The Dulany of Davies Center from 6 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance or at the door.

Mattson is professor of Islamic studies and director of Islamic chaplaincy at the Macdonald Center for Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Conn. Canadian-born, raised Catholic and a convert to Islam, Mattson lived in Pakistan in 1987-88 and worked with Afghan refugee women. In 1995 she served as adviser to the Afghan delegation to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

Mattson earned her doctoral degree in Islamic studies from the University of Chicago in 1999. She was involved with the local Muslim community and was a member of the Interfaith Committee of the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago.

An elegant and gracious speaker, Mattson is deeply committed to fostering understanding between religions. She told Newsweek that nobody likes to sit next to her on airplanes anymore.

"It helps me understand what so many other Muslims and visible minorities go through," she told the magazine.

The Forum program will be interpreted for the deaf and hard of hearing. Mattson's presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session and an informal reception in the auditorium.

Tickets for The Forum are $7 for the public, $5 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $3 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Tickets are available at the Service Center in the east lobby of Davies Center and will be sold at the door.

Patrons also may charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call 715-836-3727 or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites, 3340 Mondovi Road, is the exclusive accommodations partner for The Forum.

Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, The Forum is administered by the Activities and Programs Office.
