Tip Sheet for the week of June 30, 2008

RELEASED: June 30, 2008

Story Idea
Seventy-five percent of incoming freshmen who have attended summer orientation have signed up for UW-Eau Claire's new cell phone notification system, part of the university's overall emergency notification system implemented this spring. The free service, available since mid-April to all UW-Eau Claire students, faculty and staff, is being offered for the first time to incoming students participating in summer orientation. Those who register for the service will be kept informed via text message in the event of a campus emergency. As of Thursday, June 26, 1,980 freshman had registered for fall classes as part of the orientation process, and 1,494 of them had signed up for the cell phone notification system. Students are linked to the cell phone notification system online signup page after completing the online class registration process. Students and their parents are notified about the service earlier in the daylong orientation process so they have the opportunity to discuss it beforehand. Andrew Phillips, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, is available Monday, June 30, and Tuesday, July 1, to discuss the interest among incoming students in the cell phone notification system and plans to encourage returning students to sign up this fall. He can be reached at 715-836-2033 or phillipa@uwec.edu.

Thanks to Eau Claire native David Kolb, a scout for the 2007-08 Stanley Cup-winning Detroit Red Wings, the National Hockey League's championship trophy will be on display from noon-3 p.m. Sunday, July 6, at the Eau Claire Hobbs Ice Arena as part of a fundraiser for the Future of Ice campaign for the renovation and expansion of the arena. The public will be able to pose for a 5-by-7 photo with the trophy for a donation of $10. Spectators can also make additional freewill donations and receive information about gift naming opportunities in the building. The Future of Ice campaign is a joint effort by members of the Ice Sports Consortium, which includes the City of Eau Claire, the Eau Claire Figure Skating Club, Memorial and North High Schools' hockey programs, Eau Claire Youth Hockey and UW-Eau Claire's men's and women's hockey programs. Kolb is available to comment on his strong personal ties to Hobbs Ice Arena and amateur hockey in Eau Claire, as well as his 12 years of working for the Red Wings organization. He can be reached via cell phone at 313-717-9038. For more information about Sunday's event or to reach Ice Sports Consortium representatives, contact Debra Lang at 715-836-5607 or langda@uwec.edu.
