UW-Eau Claire Summer Sounds Series to Feature
Flute Music by UW-Eau Claire Faculty, Alumnae, Student

RELEASED: June 30, 2008

musicEAU CLAIRE — The third event of the Summer Sounds series takes place at 2 p.m. July 13 in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

UW-Eau Claire professor of music Dr. Tim Lane, alumnae Breta Borstad and Jeanne Kolis, and student Lexi Zunker will present a recital of flute duos, trios and quartets. Composers will include J.B. Boismortier, Guillaume Dufay, William Byrd, George Koechlin and William Sydeman, among others.

Lane has taught at UW-Eau Claire since 1989. He also serves as principal flutist for the Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra, as a member of the Wisconsin Woodwind Quintet, and as baroque flutist with the period instrument ensemble Les Favorites. He has made live solo and ensemble performances on Wisconsin Public Radio and has recorded a solo disc titled "Shards of Glass: Romantic Twentieth Century Music" for the now defunct Zuma label. Lane earned his bachelor's degree in music from Cleveland Institute of Music and his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Borstad began her flute studies with Gustavo Velazco in Argentina in 1997 when she was 13 years old. While in the United States for a year in 2000, she took lessons with Lane, later completing her undergraduate degree at UW-Eau Claire with a double major in flute performance and Spanish. After graduating in 2006, Breta continued her flute studies with Dr. Angeleita Floyd, completing a master's degree in music in 2008. She plans to pursue doctoral work in flute beginning in the fall of 2009.

Kolis graduated in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in music from UW-Eau Claire, where she studied with Lane. She continues to work with Lane; instructs flute students through her flute studio, The Sweetest Tweets by Jeanne Kolis; directs the senior and youth choirs at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church; and substitute teaches in area school districts.

Zunker, Conrath, recently finished her first year as a flute performance major at UW-Eau Claire, where she is a member of the University Symphony Orchestra, the musical fraternity Sigma Alpha Iota and the first-year student honor society Alpha Lambda Delta-Phi Eta Sigma. Recently, Zunker presented her freshman flute recital under the direction of Lane, with whom she has studied during the past four years. In March she was chosen to solo with the university's Wind Symphony in its spring concert.

Summer Sounds, presented by UW-Eau Claire's department of music and theatre arts, is a series of seven solo and chamber music recitals featuring weekly Sunday afternoon performances of music for winds, voice, guitar and piano. The series provides an opportunity for Eau Claire audiences to hear quality classical music in the summertime and to interact with musicians from the faculty and community. The atmosphere is casual and informal.

The fourth Summer Sounds concert will be a recital of music for oboe, flute and piano featuring UW-Eau Claire faculty members Christa Garvey, Tim Lane and Namji Kim.

Summer Sounds concerts are free and open to all.
