EAU CLAIRE — Irie Sol's fusion of funk, hip hop, reggae, blues, rock and jazz will open the sixth week of the University Centers Summer Events series Monday, July 14, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The free outdoor concert will begin at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain site is Schofield Auditorium, Schofield Hall). The audience is welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic to the concert. Free popcorn will be available.

Irie Sol's blend of genres reflects the diverse background of its members, who hail from Canada, Jamaica, Korea, the East Coast, Minneapolis and northern Wisconsin. Melodic vocals and Jamaican-style rap are backed by a full horn section and band. Their sound ranges from Stevie Wonder to Wayne Wonder.

The Summer Events series also presents the continuation of the Summer Shorts film series — presenting local, regional and international short film compilations — July 15-17. Films that received gold medals in the 34th annual Student Academy Awards, presented in June 2007, will screen Tuesday and Wednesday, July 15-16, in Davies Theatre. The films also will be presented Thursday, July 17, at the State Regional Arts Center Gallery in downtown Eau Claire. Films will be shown at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. each day. Admission is free and open to all.

Each year more than 500 college and university film students compete for the Student Academy Awards, a national competition conducted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Academy Foundation. Films are judged in four categories: alternative, animation, documentary and narrative.

With the theme "Welcome to Our Backyard," University Centers Summer Events continue through July 31. A complete schedule is available at the Service Center, 715-836-3727, or online.

The eight-week series is funded by the students of UW-Eau Claire and coordinated by the University Centers. For more information contact Paula Stuettgen, senior coordinator for assessment and special projects, at 715-836-4803.
