According to a survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers are hiring college students as interns at an increasing rate, with an eye toward filling entry-level positions with those interns once they've completed their degrees. Consistent with this trend, staff members in UW-Eau Claire's Career Services office are seeing an increase in the number of student interns being hired. Over the past four years, the number of internships posted by employers through Career Services has increased by 269 percent, said Jeanne Skoug, Career Services director. "In addition, we are seeing more and more employers of our UW-Eau Claire interns who use their internship program as a recruitment tool for full-time hires," she said. UW-Eau Claire Continuing Education's Summer Institute and Brain Blasters youth programs continue this week in Chippewa Falls:

  • The Summer Institute, an enrichment program for K-5th grade students, will run mornings through Friday, June 26, at Halmstad Elementary School. Class topics range from "Jungle Safari Adventure" for kindergarteners to offerings such as "Advanced Chess Camp," "Free the Horses" and "The Silverstein Players" for older primary grades. The program is offered in sponsorship with area school districts and youth organizations.   • The Brain Blasters program for 6th-8th grade students will run mornings through June 26 at Chippewa Falls Middle School, offering such classes as "Be a Real Guitar Hero," "Chinese Conversation and Culture" and "The Physics of Fishing." Flamenco guitar master Michael Hauser will perform a free outdoor concert at 7 p.m. tonight, June 23, on the Central Campus Mall. The show is part of the Music on the Mall series, which attracts people from the campus and greater Eau Claire communities.
