EAU CLAIRE — Innovative flute performer Peter Phippen will start the fifth week of the University Centers Summer Events series Monday, July 7, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, when the Peter Phippen Group will perform a free concert at 7 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium.

Phippen's research of the performance technique and history of his vast collection of antique and contemporary anthropological aerophones ultimately led him to bring this knowledge to concert stages and educational facilities. Since 1993, Phippen has performed concerts, workshops, artist residencies and assembly programs across the United States that are both educational and entertaining — an enchanting mix of the very old and very new in music.

The Summer Events series also will present the next screening of the Summer Shorts film series — which includes local, regional and international short film compilations — on Tuesday, July 8. A collection of 2007 Wis-Kino Kabaret films, created by a collaborative of independent filmmakers in the Madison area, will screen Tuesday and Wednesday, July 8-9, in UW-Eau Claire's Davies Theatre and Thursday, July 10, at the State Regional Arts Center Gallery in downtown Eau Claire. Films will be presented at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. each day. Admission is free and open to all.

Wis-Kino is Wisconsin's chapter of the international Kino filmmaking movement that began in Montreal in 1999. The Wis-Kino Kabaret is a whirlwind filmmaking challenge in which filmmakers have a short period of time to complete a five-minute film.

With the theme "Welcome to Our Backyard," University Centers Summer Events continue through July 31. A complete schedule is available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727, or online.

The eight-week series is funded by the students of UW-Eau Claire and coordinated by the University Centers. For more information contact Paula Stuettgen, senior coordinator for assessment and special projects, at 715-836-4803.
