Tip Sheet for the week of: July 28, 2008

RELEASED: July 28, 2008

Story Idea
Migrant labor plays a significant role in the dairy industry in western Wisconsin. What impact does the migration of these male laborers have on their families in Mexico? In a few weeks, recent UW-Eau Claire alumna and Fulbright U.S. Student Grant recipient Sarah Janes will begin research in Veracruz, Mexico, studying the impact on women and children there whose husbands, fathers, sons and brothers are migrant laborers in the United States many if them on dairy farms in western Wisconsin. Janes' interest in the topic grew during a UW-Eau Claire geography capstone course with Dr. Paul Kaldjian that included a class trip to Veracruz to meet some of the migrants' families and hear their stories. During her Fulbright research, Janes will collaborate with two researchers from the Universidad Veracruzana Intercultural. Through her study, she hopes to emphasize the importance of incorporating non-migrant women's experiences into the migration story, from public awareness to public policy and beyond. Janes is available to discuss her research and the impact she hopes to make by sharing what she learns about the families left behind by migrant laborers, including those in western Wisconsin. She can be reached by phone at 262-672-1197 or by e-mail at smjanes@gmail.com.
