Media Memo: UW-Eau Claire Experts Available to
Discuss State "Buy Local" Initiative

TO: News Editors and Directors

FROM: Julie Poquette, UW-Eau Claire News Bureau

SUBJECT: UW-Eau Claire Experts Available to Discuss State "Buy Local" Initiative

Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle on Thursday will visit Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire to announce "Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin" statewide grants intended to stimulate Wisconsin's agricultural economy by increasing the purchasing of Wisconsin-grown or -produced food by local food buyers. One of the grants will be given to the River Country Resource Conservation and Development Council, a nonprofit organization that promotes connections for the wise use of natural, human and economic resources in a 12-county region of west-central Wisconsin.

Two UW-Eau Claire faculty members with expertise in local and regional food systems are available to discuss the need for and potential impact of programs like "Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin."

Dr. Paul Kaldjian, associate professor of geography, focuses much of his research and teaching on the geography of food and the issues and activities involved in connecting the people, places and practices of food production with those of its consumption.

Dr. Eric Jamelske, associate professor of economics and director of the Chippewa Valley Center for Economic Research and Development, has helped conduct studies characterizing the local foods landscape in western Wisconsin. In April, Jamelske was an organizer of UW-Eau Claire's first Local Foods Week, which offered a series of events designed to help educate the campus and greater Eau Claire communities about local foods.

Kaldjian and Jamelske also are co-advisers to the Foodlums, a UW-Eau Claire student organization that promotes the benefits of local foods and student interest and awareness in what they eat.

Kaldjian can be reached at 715-836-2321 or kaldjian@uwec.edu. Jamelske can be reached at 715-828-2496 or jamelsem@uwec.edu.
