Musical Theatre Camp to End with Free Public Performance

RELEASED: July 14, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — High school students in grades 9 through 12 participating in the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Clearwater Musical Theatre Camp July 14-18 will present a free 45-minute performance Friday, July 18, at 5 p.m. in the Riverside Theatre of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The performance will be open to the public.

The camp, which was instituted last year, is directed by Dr. Mitra Sadeghpour, director of the UW-Eau Claire Opera Workshop and coordinator of the voice/choral division in the university's department of music and theatre arts.

The show, titled "Zero to 18 in 45 Minutes," will include five to six big musical ensembles, trios and duets, featuring a variety of show tunes interspersed with short scenes written by the performers portraying pivotal moments of growing up.

"The idea is to let the students create a musical performance that is an expression of their experience of growing up through dance, song and acting," Sadehpour said.

Twenty-five high school students are participating in the camp, which includes daily choreography sessions, intensive work on music and individual scenes, and presentations of special topics ranging from auditioning and stage makeup to attending college as a college music or theatre arts major.

"The camp provides a lot of information and demands that they learn a lot in a small amount of time," Sadeghpour said. "But the kids love it. The camp last year was a success and is really back this year by popular demand. Parents and kids were surprised with how much musical development was achieved in just a week."

There is plenty of talent to work with again this year, said Sadeghpour, who receives a CD of each participant singing prior to the camp.

"Some of the kids are more experienced than others, but they all are so brave and willing to put out such extraordinary effort," sad Sadeghpour. "I'm really looking forward to seeing what they can do."

Sadeghpour will be assisted by C. Max Athorn, a 2007 UW-Eau Claire theatre arts and music graduate, and by current UW-Eau Claire students Johnathan Turba and Caitlin Nelson. Turba will serve as the camp pianist and Nelson as the camp choreographer.
