EAU CLAIRE — Julie Rust, a vocalist who has been compared to such greats as Diana Krall and Norah Jones, will open the final week of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's University Centers Summer Events on Monday, July 28.

Rust, a performing songwriter for more than 20 years, will begin her free concert at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall (rain site is The Cabin, Davies Center). The audience is welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic to the concert. Free popcorn will be available.

Rust has touched audiences across the United States with her soothing voice, honest lyrics and virtuosic piano playing. She attended UW-Eau Claire, where she earned a degree in music theory and composition. During college, Rust played at many clubs across Wisconsin, and by the age of 20 she was touring Germany, Holland and the United States. After graduation she moved to Nashville, where she continued to perform. She currently has three CDs available and is working on her fourth.

The Summer Events series also will present the final screenings of the Summer Shorts film series. The series presenting local, regional and international short film compilations will conclude July 29-31 with "The Best of the 48-Hour Video Project." Originating in 2004 as a community filmmaking project in which participants had 24 hours to shoot, edit and create a short film, the 24- and now 48-Hour Video Projects have been remarkable hits. Some of the best films shot by Chippewa Valley community members will be shown Tuesday and Wednesday in Davies Theatre and Thursday at the State Regional Arts Center Gallery in downtown Eau Claire. Screenings are at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. each day. Admission is free and open to all.

With the theme "Welcome to Our Backyard," University Centers Summer Events is an eight-week series funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and coordinated by the University Centers. For more information contact Paula Stuettgen, senior coordinator for assessment and special projects, at 715-836-4803.
