EAU CLAIRE — Three expert faculty from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will present "Geriatric Update: Enhancing Nursing Care of Older Adults" from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 12 in Eau Claire and Sept. 26 in Marshfield.

Designed for nurses in all areas of practice who care for geriatric patients, the program focuses on atypical presentations in the elderly, physical and mental health problems, and evidence-based protocols.

Program presenters are Dr. Lois Taft, clinical nurse specialist in gerontological nursing and professor of nursing; Linda Duffy, a clinical nursing instructor involved in geriatric curriculum and a board member for the Marshfield Area Respite Care Center, a community-based day-care program for adults with dementia; and Lisa Gower-Fischer, a clinical nursing instructor and certified diabetes educator since 1999 who also works at Ministry Diabetes Services, where she provides all aspects of disease-state management and age-appropriate nursing care. Taft and Duffy attended the first Geriatric Nursing Education Consortium (GNEC) Training Institute in 2007. The institute, developed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and the Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing, is designed to promote faculty who can teach "best practices" and foster positive attitudes about aging.

Registration fees are $159 for general registration and $145 for registrations received by Aug. 27. The fee includes .6 CEUs (six hours of instruction), program materials, refreshment break and lunch.
