Janice Garrett & Dancers was formed in 2002 by artistic director Janice Garrett, who, after more than 20 years as a dance artist and independent choreographer, put down creative roots in San Francisco. "It's been one of San Francisco's finest companies from its first performances," wrote the San Francisco Chronicle. "Few choreographers can match the rich beauty of Garrett's movement, her unerring gift for flowing, complex line. Every step Garrett sets and there are lots of them arranges her dancers' joints and muscles into the kind of loveliness one could only learn from studying, say, Michelangelo. There is nothing static about her physicality: it just pours on and on."

Characterized by humor, wit, craftsmanship and a high-energy movement vocabulary, Garrett's choreography embraces a broad spectrum of emotion and physicality. She examines and translates experiences of daily life into shapes, rhythms, dynamics and spatial relationships that express both the delights and dilemmas of human existence joy, triumph over adversity, celebration and transformation. The company is committed to a vision of dance as an expressive, unspoken art form that fosters understanding and a sense of community among people.

A pre-event dessert discussion hosted by UW-Eau Claire dance instructor Toni Poll-Sorensen will be held in The Dulany of Davies Center from 6 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance or at the door.

Tickets, available at the Service Center, are $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call 715-836-3727 or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

The Artists Series is supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the state of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series.

In addition to the Artists Series' season sponsors, the performance by Janice Garrett & Dancers and the company's weeklong residency are also supported by the Xcel Energy Foundation's Corporate Giving Program and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at UW-Eau Claire.

As part of the company's residency, Janice Garrett will conduct a master class Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the dance studio (Room 105) of McPhee Physical Education Center. Suggested for dancers at an intermediate level, the class is free and open to the public. For more information call 715-836-2787.
