UW-Eau Claire Film Series
to Screen Thai Horror Film

RELEASED: Jan. 23, 2008

poster for ShutterEAU CLAIRE — "Shutter" (2004), a smart horror film from Thailand, will screen Jan. 24-27 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The International Film Society will present the film Thursday though Sunday at 6 and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

Tun (Ananda Everingham), a young photographer, and his girlfriend Jane (Natthaweeranuch Thongmee) are driving home from a party late one night. In a moment of distraction, they accidentally run down a young woman on a country road. Tun insists they flee the scene, and the couple tries to resume a normal life in Bangkok.

But Jane is haunted by nightmares, and spectral figures begin appearing in Tun's photographs. They return to the scene of the hit-and-run and find no trace of there having been an accident. When Tun's friends begin dying, one by one, Tun and Jane try to unravel the mystery before it destroys them.

"If you've seen any Asian horror movie of the last ten years, you know the drill: ghosts with bad hairdos, a grudge from beyond the grave and technophobia that turns ordinary household objects (here the humble 35mm camera) into gateways to the next world," wrote BBC reviewer Jamie Russell. "For all its technology-obsessed focus, Asian horror's always been fascinated with the relationship between the living and the dead, and 'Shutter' is no exception ... Its final twist [is] a pain in the neck that'll have you reaching for the Ibuprofen. It's a Kodak moment."

In Thai subtitled in English, the 97-minute film is rated R.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center (715-836-3727) in Davies Center's east lobby and will be sold at the door.
