EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire has announced the spring semester schedule of events at The Cabin, the Davies Center coffeehouse that provides free performances nearly every weekend and jazz concerts most Wednesday evenings.
The schedule includes a monthly open stage opportunity for campus and area talent and musical performances by UW-Eau Claire students, faculty, staff, community members and nationally touring artists. All performances are produced and managed completely by student members of The Cabin committee of the Student Senate's University Activities Commission.

The semester opens with featured performer Ellis, a Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter who will present three free concerts Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26.
Her 11:30 a.m. show Friday will be solo. Friday evening's concert will begin at 7 p.m. with a pre-show by QuinnElizabeth and a special opening by Anne Heaton on the keyboard. Ellis will take the stage at 8 p.m. both Friday and Saturday nights, performing with her longtime drummer, J.J., who played on her 2004 CD "Evidence of Joy."
Ellis' sound has been described as joyful, unpretentious modern-folk with a slight hint of country. Her accomplishments include being nominated by students as 2006 Best Female Performer in Campus Activities Magazine. She is in the process of releasing her sixth album, "Break the Spell," a collection of soulful songs with complex arrangements that seem deceptively simple with a clear message.
A rising star in folk music, Ellis is known for her vibrant and open-hearted nature and contagious sense of humor. Jim Beal of the San Antonio Express-News describes her as "a smart writer with a unique folk/rock style ... Ellis has a big voice and a fearless approach to serving up her words."
Other highlights of the semester include the following:
All shows begin at 8 p.m., except the Friday afternoon show of the featured performers, which begins at 11:30 a.m. Cabin performances are free and open to all ages. Soft drinks, domestic and imported beer, specialty coffee drinks and tea are sold at all Friday and Saturday programs. Proof of age is required for alcohol purchases. For a complete schedule, visit the Activities and Programs office (715-836-4833) or the Cabin Web site.
