EAU CLAIRE — First Fridays invites senior citizens to a discussion about "Educating Students for 21st Century Challenges" on Feb. 1 with Dr. Donald Christian, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. for breakfast and the program will follow at 9 a.m. at Christ Church Cathedral, which is on the corner of Lake and Farwell streets in downtown Eau Claire.

The presentation for First Fridays focuses on a national conversation about what universities need to be doing to educate students for 21st century challenges and about things being done at UW-Eau Claire and in the UW System to foster such an education. The presentation will draw on recent research findings, including surveys of national business and policy leaders about educational needs of individuals and the nation.

As dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Christian leads and administers the activities of the faculty and academic staff and the academic programs of the college, including curriculum, instruction, advising and scholarship. Part of his charge is to assure that arts and sciences programs are fiscally and academically strong and that they meet the needs of students, the university and the state and advance into the future.

For the safety of the senior audience, the event will be cancelled if the Eau Claire Area School District cancels or delays classes because of hazardous weather.

First Fridays programs are presented the first Friday of each month October through May, except in January, at no cost to the senior community. Participants with season passes that are stamped each month will be eligible for a prize drawing at the May presentation.

The program is funded in part by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Community Outreach Program for the Arts, the Great Harvest Bread Company and Elliot Roberts.

First Fridays is coordinated by Beverly Soll and Jennifer Brockpahler of the Activities and Programs office and is hosted by Scott and Heather Kirby of Christ Church Cathedral.

The mission of First Fridays is to provide free entertainment and educational experiences for area senior citizens through shared community and university sponsorship.
