EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's synchronized figure skating club team, The UW-Eau Claire Goldenettes, won the Swan Synch Skating Competition in Beaver Dam Feb. 11. This was the team's first big win of the season.

The team's second and final competition of the year will be at the Eau Claire Synchronized Skating Competition. The Goldenettes will skate to "Harem" by Sarah Brightman at approximately 10 a.m. Sunday, March 9, at Hobbs Ice Arena. Tickets cost $2 for adults. Children under 12 are free.

The team can also be seen performing between periods of Blugold men's and women's hockey games and at upcoming ice shows in Eau Claire on April 18-20; in Woodbury, Minn., on April 25-26; and in Green Bay on May 2-4.

Synchronized figure skating is like watching a dance line on ice, said Mary Summers, volunteer coach of The Goldenettes. During competitions, 16 skaters perform to music while doing choreographed routines consisting of different hand and arm holds, spins and formations.

According to Summers, The UW-Eau Claire Goldenettes have been a competitive synchronized club for only three years. Consisting of 21 women, the team practices two to three times each week. Although they receive funding from UW-Eau Claire, they also pay dues and have fundraisers to cover additional costs such as uniforms and travel expenses.

Junior skater Emily Krahn, Eau Claire, said people should watch The Goldenettes perform to get a better understanding of figure skating.

"Most people don't know what it's all about, and many don't even see it as a sport, so it's great for people to experience the sportsmanship and get a feel for how hard figure skaters work to compete," she said.
