Counseling Services Announces Education
and Support Groups Schedules

RELEASED: Feb. 13, 2008

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Counseling Services will be offering the following sessions in the spring 2008 semester.

  • Assertiveness Training: 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 5-April 16. In this session participants will learn assertive social skills to increase interpersonal effectiveness. They will learn about their interpersonal communication style, build positive verbal and non-verbal assertion skills, develop the ability to say no more easily, and to learn to give direct, non-judgmental feedback to others. Pete Chellman will be the group facilitator.
  • Body Love: 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 12-April 23. This women's group will search for body acceptance by examining body image the inner view of outer selves. Participants will cover the issues of food, weight, coping mechanisms and body dissatisfaction. Group facilitators are Dr. Judy Blackstone and Kristi Channing.
  • First Offenders Alcohol Education Groups: These groups will be offered on an as-needed basis by Counseling Services staff. The program meets the requirements of UW-Eau Claire's court's first offender program. Information is available in the Counseling Services office.
  • Grief Support Group: 3-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 25-April 8. Expressing grief is essential for emotional and physical health. Participants will listen to each other and talk about themselves. Barb Deutscher will be the facilitator.
  • Self-Management Skills: 2-3:30 p.m. Mondays, March 3-April 21. This group will focus on recognizing personal strengths and weaknesses, addressing self-esteem, coping with criticism, improving relationships, and developing time management and organizational skills. Pete Chellman will be the facilitator.
  • Veterans' Support Group: 3-4 p.m. Tuesdays, March 11-May 6. This is an unstructured support group. Special speakers may be brought in at the request of participants. Dr. P.J. Kennedy, a U.S. Navy Medical Corpsman, 1968-1971, will be the facilitator.

None of the groups will meet during Spring Break week, March 17-25.
