Tip Sheet for the week of Feb. 11, 2008

RELEASED: Feb. 11, 2008

Story Idea
A record number of students have applied to UW-Eau Claire for the 2008-09 academic year. As of Feb. 1, the university had received 7,665 freshman applications for the 2,040 spots in the freshman class. The application numbers are up almost 600 from a year ago. Of the students applying, 5,017 met the university's requirements and were admitted. Typically, 35-40 percent of the students who are admitted end up enrolling at the university, which means the freshman class already is nearly full. The quality of the applications — measured by ACT scores and high school class rank — has remained strong. Kris Anderson, executive director of enrollment services and director of Admissions, is available to talk about the application numbers and the admissions process. You can reach her at 715-836-5415 or anderskc@uwec.edu.

Story Idea
UW-Eau Claire students enrolled in the course "Teaching Foreign Languages in Grades 1-9" will offer free classes in French, German and Spanish for area children in grades 1-5. Classes will meet from 4:10-4:50 p.m. on Thursdays, March 13-May 8, in Hibbard Hall. The classes will help students prepare to teach foreign languages at the elementary level and give the elementary-age students some exposure to the languages. For details, contact Anne Hlas, assistant professor of Spanish and foreign language education, at 715-836-3528 or at hlasac@uwec.edu.
